Call to Action

Dear Editor and Student Body of the University of North Florida,

Something is happening in Student Government. In two days, the Student Body President, has attacked the leadership of both the Legislative and Judicial Branches. He has accused three members of the Legislative Cabinet of corruption, bitterness, vengeful hearts, and called us evildoers. In the early morning of Wednesday September 17th in a judicial hearing, Mr. Barnes stood up, and ranted about the Associate Chief Justice and called her a corrupt bully. This Associate Chief Justice, is a 17 year-old young woman, and she is far from a bully.

During Mr. Barnes' unprovoked speech, the Chief Justice, who at the beginning of the meeting had informed everyone in the audience that there was to be no commentary from the audience, asked Mr. Barnes to leave the chambers. Mr. Barnes would not comply, and when Chief Justice Ewing demanded Mr. Barnes leave the Chambers for being out of order, Mr. Barnes threatened to file non-compliance on the Chief Justice. For keeping order during the Chief Justice’s meeting?

This same Mr. Barnes is the President Barnes who accused me of using fear-tactics, and having a tyrant’s stranglehold on the Senate. When it is in fact this Mr. Barnes who is the fear-monger and TYRANT! He uses his influence to scare Senators into voting with his party in a bloc. His party has been known to tell these Senators how to vote preceding Senate meetings in closed-door meetings and even through text messages.

As for corruption, it is this Mr. Barnes who has appointed his girlfriend as well as the president of his fraternity as Assistant Directors to Executive Agencies within Student Government. Mr. Barnes is now the only person who has the authority to fire his girlfriend and fraternity brother. In the military this is called fraternization and is strictly forbidden: as in people get fired for this.

It is the same Mr. Barnes who has used the cronies in his cabinet to bully the other members of the other branches and members of the Student Body.

It is one of his cronies, Mr. Joshua Baker, Student Government Director of Athletic Affairs, who on the morning of Wednesday September 17th at 12:43 sent me a text message reading "grow some". The person who sent this text message is a paid member of the executive cabinet. These are the people that your tuition is paying. This was completely unprovoked and unwarranted. This should not be allowed. This person is not representing your best interests as students.

It is his cronies who on the night of Monday September 15th kicked off of their Senatorial ticket a Senator for disagreeing with them and not being loyal to this party. It is not ironic that this party is indeed very red much like communist China. They display all the characteristics of a wannabe authoritarian regime. In fact the Chief of Staff, Tom Blanchard wrote, “Though we [the branches of Student Government] must stay separate in practice, we must continually move to become one student government.” What Mr. Blanchard means by this is that the Legislative and Judicial branches should keep quiet and go along with whatever the Executive says.

            Mr. Barnes is determined to gain as much power as possible, regardless of the cost to the students. Mr. Barnes is determined to gain as much power as possible, regardless of the laws he breaks. Mr. Barnes is determined to gain as much power as possible, regardless of the lives he ruins, the friendships he burns, and the destruction he causes.

Mr. Barnes and his party are TYRANTS! And when the other branches of the Student Government stand up to his tyranny, he gets scared. And in his fearful state he tries, he tries so hard, to strike fear into others.

Students, this individual does not have your best interests at heart. Surely, he will attack me after this, but he will only be able to use false accusations. He will not provide you with any truthful scenarios where I have been evil or unfair. He will try to intimidate those of you who hold positions of influence. In the Greek Councils, he will try to take power away from those who stand up to him. He wants only to promote himself and dissolve the current separation of powers in Student Government.

Do not let him get away with this! Stand with me and oppose his tyranny. Stand with me in boldness against the Barnes’ Party’s assault on reason and independence. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt once told our nation in a time when many were afraid to stand up to a tyrant, “We have nothing to fear, but fear itself.”

Students, we can put an end to this, for you as a whole are stronger than anyone in Student Government. Show Mr. Barnes that his fear tactics will not be tolerated. Tell him that the only legacy he will leave is one of defeat.

UNF upsets Lipscomb, 73-64

Grimball, Henry tally double-doubles for UNF

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (Feb. 22, 2007) - Sooner or later, streaks must end.

The University of North Florida snapped some nasty ones in one fell swoop on Thursday night at UNF Arena by shocking A-Sun power Lipscomb 73- 64.

The Ospreys (3-25, 1-16 A-Sun) played perhaps their most impressive game of the season, getting double- doubles from James Grimball and Arnold Henry while icing the game away with nine straight free throws in the final two minutes to snap the nation’s longest losing streak at 15 games. UNF also snapped a 22- game conference losing streak and a 32-game streak against Division I opponents.

Their seven-game home skid? It’s history as well.

“I can’t tell you how proud I am of our guys,” UNF head coach Matt Kilcullen said. “They came out and executed the game plan and finished strong. We hit free throws, played great defense, did what we needed to do. Our players get all the credit. They came to win tonight.”

The victory came against one of the hottest teams in the A-Sun. The Bisons (17-11, 11-6 A-Sun) sit in third place in the conference standings and had won nine of 12 games coming into Thursday. An inability to hit the long-range shot eventually doomed the Bisons, who hit just 10 of 40 3-pointers, including a 1-for-14 first half.

UNF shot 45 percent for the game and hit 24 of 35 free throws, including 17 of 24 in the second half. The Ospreys also committed just 11 turnovers, their second-lowest total of the year.

Chris Timberlake led UNF with 16 points, one of four Ospreys in double figures. Germaine Sparkes added 14 points, James Grimball 13 points and 10 rebounds and Arnold Henry 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Sparkes erased a brief 2-0 deficit two minutes into the game with a basket and free throw, and the Ospreys never trailed again. UNF led by as many as 13 points over the first 20 minutes and were ahead 32-27 at halftime behind 12 points from Timberlake.

In the second half, Lipscomb continued to fire up 3- pointers – missing nine in a row at one point – before finally catching fire late. Brian Fisk, who led all scorers with 21 points, drained back-to-back 3-pointers to bring the Bisons within 53-51 with 5:03 to play.

UNF answered with an 8-0 run over the next three minutes, however, to build a 61-51 lead with 2:08 to go.

The Bisons hit three of their final six 3-pointers to stay within striking distance from there, but Cortez Riley, Henry and Timberlake combined to hit their final nine attempts to ice the game and give the Ospreys their first win in 2007. Timberlake’s four free throws were his only points of the second half.

Ard added 15 points for the Bisons, while Michael Teller had 12.

UNF returns to action on Saturday afternoon in its season finale, facing second-place Belmont at UNF Arena. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m.

We've all seen the signs everywhere around campus, and now we've all seen the whiteboards. But, we don't know who.
The love/hate publicity campaign has been buzzing around campus for two weeks now and its causing some great discussions. I've seen and heard more opinions in the last two days than the last two years at this campus. But still no one has claimed responsiblity. I want to say job well done, but should I say it to BCM, JCL, the Philosophy Department, or the Spanish Department?

Welcome to TSQ Magazine's blog. For those of you who don't know, which is pretty much everyone right now, TSQ is a student magazine debuting this Spring on UNF. It's a magazine for students and by students discussing the stuff students want to discuss.

I want to use this blog as a way to keep everyone up to date with the progress of the magazine and also give a few sneak peeks of what is on its way to print. So keep this blog in your favorites and check it EVERY DAY, or at least as much as you do facebook.
